It was Johann Bayer (1603) who first used the letters of the Greek alphabet in constructing a star name related to magnitude, a Greek letter is used with the Latin possessive form of the name of the constellation in which the star is located. The names were given to the brightest stars in each constellation, starting with apha as the brightest and omega the faintest. An early method of identifying magnitude.
